How to Avoid Overindulging During The Holiday Season

10 Tips to Help You Improve Your Eating Habits During This  Holiday Season:

We all know that stuffing your tummy isn't a good idea for your digestive health or your immune system health. We all know it, but most of us still tend to do it during this time of the year.

Tip #1: Eat your breakfast AND lunch before you have a big dinner.

You will definitely eat less and be less hungry if you have steady sugar levels throughout the day.

Tip #2: Eat slowly, chew really well, and wait at least 20 minutes before you go for seconds.

If you wait for at least 20 minutes, you most likely will NOT feel hungry anymore, and you will definitely have more control over your cravings.

Tip #3: Indulge wisely!

If you choose to eat something “not good for you,” make sure it is something you really love. Also, make sure it’s something you only allow yourself this time of the year, like mashed potatoes, chocolate cakes, cookies, or other scrumptious goodies.

Tip #4: If you are at a party, stay away from the food table.

Choose to have a conversation far enough from the food table to avoid mindless eating.

Tip #5: Don’t eat to please others!

In some cultures, you may offend the host by not eating a lot or not eating something special they made. Remember, you can be genuine with the host and grateful without actually eating what you do not want. Learning to say no can be good for your gut.

Tip #6: Drink, drink, drink, and hydrate with good-quality water.

Make sure you hydrate well before the dinner since overeating can lead to constipation. However, if you are hydrated enough, you should not have a big problem with constipation the next day. Also, pre-hydrating works well when you consume alcohol to prevent further dehydration from it.

Tip #7: Keep the alcoholic drinks to a minimum.

This one is a must. Overdoing it with alcohol can cause long-term inflammatory problems. If you choose to indulge in one drink, get a glass of red wine over eggnog.

Tip #8: Consider changing your whole holiday eating mindset.

If you consciously intend to eat healthy during this holiday dinner, you will. But if you don’t intend, you may find it harder to do.

Tip #9: Serve yourself!

When you serve yourself, you are more likely to put less food on your plate. Serving yourself will save you from those extra calories you’d get if someone else served you.

Tip #10: Fake your sensation of fullness.

Try to load up on the green salads and raw greens. These sides will help fill you up and also improve your digestion process.

I often see clients that have either symptoms of high cortisol or low cortisol (did you know there was a difference?) Symptoms of high cortisol: Anxiety Fluid retention in hands/feet Heart palpitations Nervousness Decreased concentration Hypoglycemia - craving carbs Sleep disturbances (falling or staying) Tired but wired Weight gain - especially around the waist Symptoms of decreased cortisol: Apathy, burned-out feeling Hypoglycemia Salt cravings Joint/muscle pain Decreased stamina Fatigue Why the difference? It depends on which stage of adrenal dysfunction that you are experiencing! The four stages of adrenal fatigue? 👇 Stage 1: alarm reaction. (high cortisol) Stage one is your body going into an alarm mode from a certain stressor - this could be something as basic as a job interview. During the early stages of adrenal fatigue, the body produces a large amount of hormones that are required for an adequate stress response. Fatigue is mild, and many will start turning to caffeinated drinks and stimulants to get through the day during stage one. Stage 2: resistance response (high cortisol) By now, the body has been subjected to a great deal of stress, and cortisol levels continue to rise. Normal activities can still be done, although exhaustion starts to become more apparent and it may take longer to feel fully rested. Your entire hormone circuit is starting to dysregulate at this point. Stage 3: adrenal exhaustion. (low cortisol) During this stage, the endocrine system becomes more focused on producing stress hormones. There will be a significant decline in DHEA levels as well as your enthusiasm. Frequent illnesses start to occur, and feelings of fatigue and anxiety are profound. This is when you'll start to experience the effects of an adrenal crash. Stage 4: burnout. (low cortisol) By stage four, the adrenal glands have gone offline. Once it reaches this stage, it can take a long time to bring the body back into balance. I have a serious question for you…one that may be hard to answer. Are you taking responsibility or accepting the conditions of your health? Taking radical personal responsibility is crucial in order to live your own version of success! Taking responsibility doesn’t mean blaming or shaming yourself. It means accepting that the way we are living may be contributing to our health problems, and realizing that changes need to be made. At the end of the day, your success is dependent upon you, so rise up and take control of your life and your health. Don’t accept where you are at if you aren’t healthy or happy. People who take control of their own physical, mental, and spiritual health tend to live longer. Book a consultation with me today HERE to learn more. Check out my latest Youtube video here:
