Building Resilience with History of Gut Illness

Building Resilience with History of Gut Illness

How is it that one person gets an infection and another person does not? Even if the infection was picked up from the same room, the same amount of time spent there and the same people were around. Why was the other person resilient? And I believe, that is where the scientific research should spend A LOT of time now, learning why was the gut microbiome resilient for the person who did not fall ill.

There is plenty of early research on gut health and immunity connection and I’ve been paying a lot of attention to how the concentration/levels of secretory immunoglobulin A makes a world of difference in keeping the mucosal lining ready to fight off the invaders. My presumption with COVID-19 as a virus entering the body, it would work the same as with any virus (invader) coming in. If your oral mucosa is lined with healthy levels of SIgA, you should be in a better position fighting with the virus.

Mucosal surfaces cover our nose, mouth, throat, digestive tract and the mucosal layer plays an important role in supporting our health, specifically immune system health.

Our GI tract’s role is to let good things in, like nutrients and keep bad things out such as invaders, toxins, and undigested food substances. There are two types of immune reactions that are going on there: innate and acquired immunity. One is a quick response and the other is like a delayed response where the system had a chance to think “how to fight and with what”.

SIgA is the primary antibody response at the mucosal level. The B-cells within the mucosa are activated upon the presence of pathogens and allergens and therefore produce SIgA (our favorite fighters) in response.

When I start working with my clients, I almost always now recommend testing fecal SIgA. And since many of my clients never tested for it before, it becomes a good baseline to monitor future progress.

Low SIgA levels generally have an increased risk of IBDs, food sensitivities, IBS symptoms, leaky gut and infections.

There are many reasons why many with gut illness or even without it, show low SIgA, and here’s a small list of possible reasons:

  • Stress
  • Food allergies/food sensitivity
  • Gut infections/low-grade silent inflammation
  • Poor dietary choices
  • Certain medications

If you are working with a functional medicine practitioner, then you know that there are options including dietary, lifestyle, nutraceuticals, and they are involved in repairing gut lining and increasing secretory IgA.

And if you are reading this at home and still are not ready to jump into the type of work I do with my clients, you are probably asking: “How can you improve SIgA right away?

There are certain products and foods that are helpful in increasing the levels of SIgA, those include:

  • Bone Broth/Gelatine
  • S. Boulardii
  • Shitake and maitake mushrooms
  • SBI protect-Colostrum

In my practice I see the levels of SIgA go up as my client’s gut health improves tremendously.

And while it is not the only thing that will help during COVID-19 times, in my opinion, it certainly is of great importance.
