With COVID 19 barging in so unexpectedly, things got stressful and the world is changing as we know it. We find ourselves thinking more about immune system health than ever before.

What about those who already have compromised immune systems? What about those who have chronic, inflammatory bowel conditions? THE GOAL is to keep your immune system as strong as possible, to be resilient is where you want to be. How can you be resilient if you have a chronic condition?

The very first step is to address your adrenal health. One of the most common sources of clinical and subclinical stress is an infection, which can keep the body in a state of chronic stress. The longer a person remains in a chronic stress response, the higher the risk for hormone, immune and metabolic breakdown. And low-grade infection can often be undetected. That’s why in functional medicine we dig deep to find undetected root causes and undetected infections.

We have 2 major systems in adrenal response: Catecholamines (Epinephrine and Norepinephrine) & Cortisol. Our Catecholamines prepare the body to act while Cortisol mobilizes energy (glucose) and other substances to fuel the action. When we are experiencing high stress, we have high cortisol (at least in the beginning). And high cortisol can lower serotonin. Serotonin is a happy hormone/neurotransmitter. Can you be happy for too long if you have high stress/high cortisol…. nope.

So, the next steps would be as follows: “not happy” leads to depressive symptoms, and if you have chronic gut problems the result is you may not see improvements with or without treatments. This is a classic scenario. Let’s not follow this pattern and let’s address adrenal health, adrenal hormone balance as well as endocrine health. This balance will be a great solid ground to re-build your strong immune health. Testing adrenals are so important.

Another great point about the immune system that is often being overlooked is testing SigIgA (your secretory immunoglobulin). This immunoglobin tells a story about your immune system response in the mucosal linings, how well you respond to foreigners (virus, bacteria, fungus, etc.). If the number is within the normal range, you can sleep better knowing your immune system response is adequate. But if the numbers are too low, that needs to be addressed. And there are actionable steps that can be taken to improve your SigIgA. I often recommend testing for SigIgA when running functional diagnostics for my clients. Knowing yours can help you so much.

Let me know if adrenal health or immunoglobulins are of interest to you so I will continue sending you some useful information. And if you are ready to heal, let me know.
